Below is a brief description of the facility:

Masseria GUARDIOLA
The building complex, in a complete state of abandonment, can be reached from the road to S. Vito dei Normanni, turning right at km. 4,600 from the town of Francavilla. The farm, despite its state of disrepair and additions from later periods, still shows signs of its monumental building appearance. The overall original structure is rectangular in shape. A dovecote, on the north side, raised compared to the construction plan, suggests an access portal to the farm, which has now disappeared. On the left a second portal leads into a long room covered with tiles, probably stables or animal shelters. The chapel, the cisterns, the oven and the complexity of the spaces reserved for courtyards and cottages testify to the importance and economic autonomy achieved in the past by the farmhouse complex. The origins of the farm can be dated to the 16th century. Pietro Palumbo states that it appears in the 1604 land registry "at the head" of the Cotogno family. In the land registry of 1636 we read «Giuseppe Francesco Cotogno, for the farmhouse named the Guardiola with chapel, garden, tower, curti, supenne, thatched houses, aquariums, and water ditches, a five closures and other members, which exchange with his dowry farm called lo spicchiullo (...) Again Palumbo says that «from the Cotogno family the farm passed to the Martini di Oria and then to the Forleo, but does not report the source of this information.
It can certainly be stated that in the land registry of 1753 the farm appears among the assets of the Argentina family who were owners until 1971.
In said farm there are livestock: two cart oxen, two plowing oxen, two cows and a donkey."
The farm, therefore, is linked for another two centuries to the Argentina family who sold it only a few years ago.
Inside there is a courtyard, closed by a powerful dry stone wall, strengthened by buttresses: it develops towards the south, on the right, open enclosures delimited by walls, on the left a two-storey building, which is unfortunately crumbling today . On the ground floor of the latter there were rooms with barrel vaults, on the first floor there was the owner's home; a narrow internal staircase leads into a hall which leads to two rooms with cross vaults and a rear terrace, which overlooks a garden. To the left of the building you can glimpse the remains of a large cistern and a chapel richly frescoed with paintings of sacred images. The small church has half collapsed, only a side wall and part of the front wall remain, on which a beautiful fresco resists the inevitable destruction, certainly executed by an expert hand (the author could be L. Delli Guanti) depicting the "Ecstasy of Saint Teresa" . Even if you can barely read the whole thing, the painting shows a clear inspiration from the sculptural complex of the same name that Bernini created in the 17th century for the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome, where it still stands today.
The whole complex is undoubtedly one of the most important in the area; it contains important architectural elements and pictorial works of considerable value and interest, which, due to the state of degradation in which they are found, risk disappearing forever.
For this reason we believe that it should be brought to the attention of the competent authorities for its recovery and restoration.
