Sannicola is a municipality of about 6,000 inhabitants located on the Ionian side of Salento, includes the hamlets of Chiesanuova and San Simone, as well as most of the coastal resort of Lido Conchiglie, and was established in 1908 by detachment from the municipality of Gallipoli. Meteorologically speaking, Sannicola falls within the Lower Salento area, which has a distinctly Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot humid summers. In Byzantine times the whole area was called until the 18th century by the Greek name of Rodogallo, which meant “place of beautiful roses.“ Much spoken is the Salento dialect, which is loaded with influences that can be traced back to the dominations and peoples who settled in this area over the centuries: Messapians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Lombards, Normans, Albanians, French and Spanish. The particular strategic location a few kilometers from Gallipoli is a real strong point, reaching the seaside resorts of Punta Pizzo, Baia verde, Rivabella and Lido Conchiglie quite easily.
