ARCHITECTURE

The Castle of Castelleone is mainly composed of three original architectural nuclei, representing three historical periods.

Medieval era (dating back to the 12th century), traceable in the thick stone walls (even over 2.5 metres) that converge in the large and mighty Longobard Tower (about 36 metres high, square in shape and divided into five levels).

Renaissance period (dating back to the 15th-16th centuries) involving the main body of the Castle formed by its main Keep or Main Tower (also known as the Wedding Tower), round in shape (divided into five levels including the Old Chapel) and joined to the main nucleus of the Castle proper.

The Neo-Gothic period (dating back to the 19th century) concerns that part of the building, joined to the Renaissance core, which overlooks the inner village and the Vicolo dell'Ulivo (Olive Tree Alley), and which encloses the Belvedere Tower at its summit. This portion of the castle is the only one to have perimeter walls plastered in an antique pink colour.

LOCATION

About 450 metres above sea level in Umbria, in the municipality of Deruta (Perugia). It can be reached from Deruta along the scenic hilly road called "via di Castelleone", about 4.5 km from the main town.
