The name Gallipoli (Caddhrìpuli in Gallipoli dialect) derives from the Greek “Kalé Polis,“ the meaning of which is “beautiful city.“ The city, located along the western coast of the Salento peninsula, juts out over the Ionian Sea with a coastline of about 20km that also includes the localities of Punta Pizzo, Baia verde, Rivabella and Lido Conchiglie, and is divided into two parts: the suburb, which houses the more modern part of the city, and the historic center, located on an island connected to the mainland by a 17th-century bridge. Of great historical and naturalistic importance is the Island of St. Andrew, about a mile off the historic center, characterized by the presence of wild animals, such as the Corsican Gull. The entire coastline boasts a shallow and very long beach composed of white dunes, made up of beautiful sandy shores with crystal clear water that are very popular in summer, and is interspersed with cliffs that open up to sandy shores and hidden corners.
