RIF. MATI-599

Cl. En. F

Matino, a quiet town in the Province of Lecce, lies downstream of the “serra di S. Eleuterio,“ has about 11,419 inhabitants and is located at mt.75 a.s.l. It is 38 km from its capital city and 12 km from the Bay of Gallipoli, with which it is connected by road and rail network. It has recently been recognized as a tourist city for its special historic center, now a garrison of many influential world citizens. The municipality, which covers an area of 26, 28 km², reaches 38 m above sea level at its minimum and 172 m above sea level at its maximum. The town dominates the valley called Taviano-Matino, which represents one of the most fertile areas of Salento. Very frequent are the masserie, large rural buildings that insisted on large estates, the result of the considerable impulse given to agricultural production in the Bourbon period (1724-1860). Quite widespread are also the so-called caseddhi, or pajare (haystacks) typical example of rural building, derived from ancient building techniques of Magna Graecia origin. Widespread rural construction of a modern type testifies to an attachment to the land of local people and a lively agritourism market. The territory of the municipality borders to the north with the municipalities of Parabita and Collepasso, to the east with the municipality of Casarano, to the south with the municipalities of Melissano and Taviano, and to the west with the municipalities of Gallipoli and Alezio.
