Dimora del Carmine, Ancient Convent renovated and restored

Historic Dimora del Carmine On the hills of the Oltrepo´ Pavese, at 600 m above sea level lies an ancient 18th-century oratory with an adjoining dwelling developed on 3 floors. On April 25, 1755, the Vicar General of Bobbio, Archdeacon Michele Cambiaggi, authorized on the advice of the bishop of Bobbio, the construction, requested by Don Felice Gazzotti, of the Oratory of Carmine, parish of Ruino, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Carmel and to St. Anthony and St. Felice da Cantalice. Following a careful conservative restoration about 20 years ago, the Dimora del Carmine was re-purposed as a country home on the upper floors and as reception halls in the “well“ and “paliotto“ halls on the ground floor. The intervention was excellently executed with the intention of maintaining the pure and simple atmosphere of the previous use as well as leaving intact the perception of the historicity of the building. The antique doors were retained in most of the rooms and were treated with dusting of fané pigments to maintain their antique patina. The fireplaces have been redecorated in faux-marbre. The huge local stone fireplace in the billiard room, bears carved the date of its placement 1768. Passages in the halls and hallway are marked by fluted pilasters in keeping with the romantic classicism of the late 1700s and marble columns in red tones with taupe glazes. The three floors have been divided into three independent dwellings each approx. 250 sq. m. with independent heating, bathrooms all in pink marble and kitchen. The second floor is used as a “living area“ with the kitchen rooms of the dining room, master bathroom also in pink marble and the billiard room. The second floor, with spectacular eighteenth-century floors and rafters, has a large kitchen living room, large bedrooms (one of which has a small hallway with an adjoining windowed open part overlooking the Church of San Felice da Cantalice from where religious services were once followed) and two bathrooms. Here, too, the restoration has left the historicity of the building intact by keeping the roof support system with wooden joist joints in view, while the walls have been whitewashed and the floors have remained with long wooden slats. The ground floor has barrel ceilings, pink marble floors, as do all bathrooms, and pink marble columns dividing the two large halls. Two exposed stone bathrooms, an extraordinary kitchen in an all-stone room with arched vaults. The use of the Dimora del Carmine can be as a single villa of approx. 750 sq. m. or 3 apartments of approx. 250 sq. m. each, with independent access. All within a fenced-in park of one hectare. The entrance to the small oratory is attached to that of the Mansion and is accessed from the small square via stone steps there is a solid wooden door with a key lock and a rose window with glass in the upper part. The interior is simple and harmonious plastered in a soft yellow in the vertical partitions and white on the vaults and fluted pilasters that give a sober rhythm to the simplicity of the place. In the interior to the right is a small walled basin of fine marble for holy water. The property has 10,000 square meters of private fenced parkland. Panoramic view. To the side of the mansion in adjoining courtyard area is a large building to be renovated where it is possible to make stables, janitor´s quarters and possible guest rooms as well as garages and parking spaces. This property is 80 km from Milan 40 km from Pavia, 45 km from Piacenza.
