Borgio Verezzi: between history, beauty and breathtaking views
Perched between sea and hills in the Riviera Ligure di Ponente, Borgio Verezzi is one of the most charming villages in Italy, officially listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. The municipality is actually made up of two distinct souls: Borgio, the modern and coastal part, and Verezzi, the ancient nucleus located in a panoramic position on a ridge overlooking the sea.
Location and context
Located between Finale Ligure and Pietra Ligure, Borgio Verezzi enjoys a privileged position that offers breathtaking views of the Ligurian Gulf. Its proximity to beaches and inland trails makes the village ideal for those seeking both seaside relaxation and nature experiences such as the Borgio Verezzi Caves, among the most colorful in Italy.
History and Tradition
Verezzi´s origins date back to Roman times, but the village has retained a medieval layout that is reflected in its cobblestone streets, pink stone arches, and old stone houses. Strolling through its four hamlets - Crosa, Poggio, Piazza and Roccaro - one breathes in an atmosphere suspended in time.
Verezzi Stone: history of a unique material
Verezzi Stone, also known as pink marble or Lara stone, is a compact, resistant variant of Finale Stone, which originated between 25 and 10 million years ago on the floor of a shallow Miocene sea. Rich in fossils-from shells to shark teeth, starfish and brachiopods-this stone has a pinkish-yellow color that distinguishes it in its applications.
Mining was concentrated in the famous Cava Vecchia (also known as the Fossil Quarry), a rare example of a tunnel quarry that was active until the 1930s, when a collapse caused its permanent closure. Today, visible vestiges of these places remain along the Sentiero dei Carri Matti and the Geological Trail, where it is possible to observe piles of rubble and walls engraved with workings.
Although it is no longer quarried-to preserve the landscape and ecosystem of the area-stone is still a protagonist of the hamlets: it can be recognized in dry-stone walls, house portals, stairways, street pavements, and even in ornaments such as corbels, fountains, and stairways.
Beauties and attractions
In addition to its architectural charm, Verezzi offers picturesque and scenic routes such as those connecting the hamlets and is famous for its Teatro Festival, one of Italy´s most impressive open-air theatrical events, hosted in the scenic Piazza di Sant´Agostino. From the belvedere there is a breathtaking panorama that, on clear days, sweeps as far as Corsica. To complete the picture, the intense colors of the sunset, the Mediterranean scents and the enveloping silence make Borgio Verezzi a place of pure poetry.
Borgata Roccaro
Roccaro is the oldest of Verezzi´s hamlets and perhaps the least known to the general public, but for this very reason it preserves intact its archaic and reserved charm. Surrounded by green Mediterranean scrub, it is a small nucleus of stone houses that tell of the village´s rural and austere origins.
The name Roccaro most likely derives from “rock“ or “cliff,“ referring to the elevated position and rocky nature of the terrain. Here, Verezzi Stone surfaces everywhere: in the dry stone walls, in the hand-carved steps, in the walls of the houses that literally blend with the landscape. Historical records of Roccaro speak of an ancient settlement, perhaps among the first developed in Verezzi, inhabited by shepherds and farmers. Rural ruins, the remains of cisterns and cultivated terraces can still be found today, along with unspoiled views that restore the original atmosphere of the Ligurian hillside.
A hamlet out of time, where there are few houses with quiet alleys and splendid open views of the valley and the Ligurian Gulf.
The Dwelling
The 166-square-meter house is located inside a characteristic stone building, with thick walls and vaulted ceilings that evoke the Ligurian building tradition. A careful renovation has been carried out with attention to the quality of materials and living comfort, while maintaining great respect for the identity of the property.
Internal distribution
Entrance hall and eat-in kitchen with large adjacent pantry
Living room and two bedrooms
Main bathroom and second bathroom both with shower
Large 40 sqm wine cellar with direct access from the hallway
Small floor cellar ideal for wine storage
Land and Outdoor Spaces
the real added value of the property is the connection with the green. The house opens onto two large swaths of land planted with olive and fruit trees, enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the sea as far as Capo Mele and the outlines of the other hamlets.
In addition, about 500 meters from the house, the property includes additional swaths of land planted with productive olive trees, ideal for those who wish to combine residence and small amateur cultivation.
Access and Parking
To complete the offer a very rare element for the area: a portion of land used for parking on the main road, just 100 meters from the house, able to accommodate at least three cars.
