16th-century Convent with garden Sarteano
16th-century Convent with garden and olive grove for sale in the historical center of Sarteano, Siena. Built in 1498 along the medieval walls of Sarteano following the convents building rules prescribed by St. Francis, this splendid residence gathers the charm of history handed over through the centuries: for five hundred years it has been the exclusive residence of the cloistered nuns of the Order of the Poor Clare Sisters, for most of the 1900s used as a school and 1970 became a private historic residence. The Convent has an exposed stone facade and a typical open T-shaped layout (Tau Francescana), and is on three levels, including two above-ground floors and a first floor under the street, with a total area of 1427. sqm / 15360 sq ft. As a result of considerable renovation and conservative restoration work carried out between 1970 and 1990, the building has regained its peculiar characteristics: wooden and vaulted ceilings, terracotta floors, and exposed stone walls, while the bathrooms and kitchens are covered with charming majolica tiles. The current owners have transformed this extraordinary residence from a former convent to a hotel, offering charming hospitality to third millennium travellers. The new hotel destination is able to accommodate guests in the spacious panoramic halls and en-suite bedrooms, set up with fine period furnishings, comforted by a vast garden in the shade of pine trees and the vastness of the view of the lakes of Chiusi, Montepulciano and Trasimeno. The main building is entirely dedicated to halls, reading areas as a lovely veranda, ensuite bedrooms and suites. The basement, with access from the courtyard and by an internal staircase, is used as restaurant open to guests and visitors: here there are a porch, a foyer, two dining rooms, the kitchen, guest bathrooms, storage and clearing rooms, two cellars and a woodshed. A feature wine list includes an assortment of fine local wines as Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and Chianti Classico. The garden is extremely well-kept and surrounded on one side by the village walls, with a splendid view of the panorama across the Val di Chiana to the lakes, while on the north side there is an olive grove. Included a detached dependence to be fully restored through a structural work and renovation project preserving the original architectural features. Period residence of great value excellently preserved, well known in the hotel and hospitality industry but also ideal as a private residence thanks to its privacy and proximity to all town services.
