Certificate already at the end of the 9th century, the building was delivered to the bishops of Reggio by the emperor Otto I of Saxony in 962. [1] After belonging for years to the Da Fogliano family, Arceto was removed from the Estensi and in 1414 delivered to the Boiardos, which provided important interventions on the buildings.
In 1441 it was invested in the castle, removed from the Fogliano, by the Marquis of Ferrara Niccolò III d'Este Bernardina Lambertini, ordering that it was left to the son Feltrino Boiardo. [2]
In 1474, after various contrasts between the two feudal lords Matteo Maria Boiardo and Giovanni Boiardo, the territory of the County of Scandiano was divided as follows: to Matteo Maria went the territories of Scanandiano, Gesso, Torricella and Sabbione, while the cousin Giovanni took Arceto, Casalgrande, Dinazzano, Salvaterra and Montebbio. The induction for Giovanni Boiardo of these territories was confirmed by the Ducal Room which was first in 1475 and subsequently in 1490.
In 1499, at the death of Count Camillo Boiardo, son of Matteo Maria Boiardo, successor of these as a feudal lord of Scandiano, the territory divided in 1474 was again gathered under the control of Giovanni Boiardo.
In 1565 the castle became the property of Ottavio I Thiene, husband of Laura Boiardo, daughter and heir of the penultimate feudal lord Giulio Boiardo. The noble family of the Counts Thiene, during its administration of the fief (1565-1622), had the oratory dedicated to San Rocco and the fortress built inside the castle.
The castle, between 1622 and 1634, passed under the direct control of Casa d'Este, and then passed to the Bentivoglio and then in 1643 to the cadastral branch of the Este di Scandiano.
In 1740 the Marquis Giovanni Battista De Mari restored the fortress, making important changes and adding side buildings. It is from 1751 the construction of a large internal staircase adorned with five terracotta statues.
In 1777, the castle passed to Livia De Mari (children of Giovanni Battista), married to the Marquis Andrea Spinola of the noble Genoese family of the Spinola di San Luca, Marquises of San Donnino di Liguria, Arceto and Corticella. Nobility of the Marquises of Lerma[3].
In 1796 the castle of Arceto will be removed by the Spinola, following the abolition of the feuds.
In 1811 by Napoleonic decree the castle will return to the Spinolas, which will sell it after the Parodi banker; the latter will sell it in turn in Flaminio Regnani[4].
Currently the Municipality of Scanandiano is the owner of part of the castle and the main floor.
